What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small metal screws or pegs which replace the roots of teeth which are failing or have already been lost. Dental Implants can be used to support a replacement for a single tooth or a row of many teeth in a bridge.

Replacing lost teeth with dental implants can avoid the need to wear dentures or false teeth. Using dental implants can also avoid damaging other sound teeth in providing dental bridges to replace missing teeth.

Dental implants are made of titanium metal which bonds to the jawbone over a period of time in a process called osseointegration to provide a strong lasting restoration.

SAME DAY TEETH

In this procedure the implants are placed in the jawbone and the teeth are attached to the implants all in one procedure. It is a popular choice for many people as it avoids numerous visits to the dentist and has an instant result. However, the process of osseointegration will not be complete before the implants are subjected to the forces of biting and eating and so a greater number of implants may be required due to the risk of implant failure. Same day teeth also cost more than conventional implant treatment.

DELAYED IMPLANTS

This is the preferred method of implant treatment for most people. The dental implants are placed in the jawbone where teeth are missing or to replace teeth that are being extracted. The implants are then left buried under the gums for a period of three to four months to allow osseointegration to occur. During this time you can wear temporary removable teeth if needed. Following this time the implants are checked to see that they are firm prior to providing you with your new tooth or teeth which are then fixed firmly onto the implants.

BONE GRAFTING

Occasionally it is necessary to build up the volume of bone where it has previously been lost through infected teeth or where teeth have been missing for some time. This is done with the use of powdered bone graft materials which may be placed along with your implants, or in some cases up to six months in advance of implant placement where there has been much bone loss. The use of bone grafting can not only provide bone growth into which implants may be placed but can also be used to improve the appearance and contour of the gums.
